Case Study: Shaun Tan, The Lost Thing

The second book I decided to analyse from author/illustrator Shaun Tan was that of The Lost Thing. The same framework was used as this allows for a later comparison between different works by the artist. I am already seeing the advantages of carrying out these studies as it forces me to see the book rather than just look through it. Trying to analyse the structures, the story, text any many other elements shall hopefully have a positive affect on my own work. I will carry out one more study of another book by Shaun Tan and will then try to work on a comparative exercise which will form the basis of the particular case study. This should give a more rounded approach to studying this particular artist and hopefully highlight the techniques used, rather than just analysing one particular book on it's own. The notes from this study of The Lost Thing are shown below with images and additional notes or explanations.
The uniformity of the story or world is shown in the end papers

The first and last images are in contrast with the first image having multiple text, images and additional information within the background. The final image seems rather bare in comparison, no text, a single image but this create a large spec for contemplation on the meaning of the story as discussed in the analysis of the work.

The image above has been analysed, how the eye is lead through the image is shown. Other aspects such as gesture, lighting have also been discussed in the analysis.
