Case Study: Levi Pinfold, Black Dog

Using the same framework to analyse the first study of the work of Levi Pinfold. The reason I have chosen this particular artist was my awareness of this particular book and the use of visual metaphor. This book won the Kate Greenaway medal in 2013 whilst others works have also won awards and gained the artist much recognition within the worlds of illustration and publishing. The other works I wish to analyse are new to me so will be interesting to analyse whilst being the first time I have read them. This work contains a theme of confronting fears, facing up to challenges with fear or problems often seeming much larger in our minds than in reality. The results of this study are shown below.

The book sees to have two main structures as shown below. The first method seems to be used to introduce characters, give us the text and then shows reactions whilst the full colour illustrations shown on the opposite page seem to illustrate the text. The second format uses full double page spreads, the changes in format seem to change as the pace or themes portrait through the narrative change. This shows how the design of the book closely relates to the story itself.

The image that was analysed is shown below, the path the eye seems to lead is also shown.
