The image shown above was created to explore both composition and possible colour palette that might be used for spread pages 8-9. My case study on Shaun Tan showed me the huge variety of techniques or methods he employs to help establish and explore ideas. I decided to use some of the images from my robbery at the national gallery and see if I could create a composition from them that depicts a scene that feels somewhat like the Scottish highlands. Some examples of the images I used to begin this process are shown below.
I compiled these to try and create an image I had in mind although some element of control is given over to the images themselves. These form a rough idea of what I had in mind but also create something different that I would not have thought of myself. This photo bashing technique has brought up some interesting results. Once composed I changed into black and white to see how the tones worked, I then also tried different versions of the unicorn and main character to see how these may fit in with scale, perspective etc. This is a step forward and this experiment has been useful, I will experiment with other ideas or ways of forming compositions and then try to see what combinations of methods or technique work best for me in different situations. Some examples of this work are shown below.
